After School Program Assistant

About the Program

Royal View Church's After School Program provides children with a safe, welcoming, and engaging environment after school. The program places a strong emphasis on sports, recreation, and active play, helping children develop positive relationships with physical activity and discover recreational opportunities available within their community.
As part of our programming, we bring in sports and recreation organizations three times throughout the year, giving students the opportunity to be introduced to a variety of recreational activities and programs available in their community. These experiences are designed to help children discover new interests, develop skills, and encourage lifelong participation in recreation and physical activity.

Position Overview

We are looking for a reliable, energetic, and child-focused After School Program Assistant who is passionate about working with children and enjoys sports, recreation, and active programming.
The successful candidate will play an important role in creating an engaging after-school experience for children ages 4 and up. They will assist with daily programming, including sports, games, physical activity, recreation, crafts, homework support, and other enrichment activities.
This is a great opportunity for someone with a background in recreation, kinesiology, child and youth care, education, or another child-focused field who wants to gain hands-on experience working with children in a community-based program.

Key Responsibilities

  • Actively supervise children ages 4 and up throughout the program.
  • Lead and participate in sports, recreation, games, and physical activities.
  • Help plan and facilitate age-appropriate recreational programming.
  • Encourage children to try new sports and recreational activities.
  • Help introduce children to recreational opportunities and programs available in their community.
  • Support visiting sports and recreation organizations during program visits.
  • Assist with homework, crafts, games, and other enrichment activities.
  • Create an inclusive environment where children of different abilities and interests can participate.
  • Encourage teamwork, cooperation, sportsmanship, and positive social interactions.
  • Support children's social, emotional, physical, and developmental needs.
  • Assist with snack time, transitions, outdoor play, and daily routines.
  • Maintain active supervision and follow all safety procedures.
  • Help maintain a clean, organized, and safe program environment.
  • Communicate concerns regarding children's behaviour, safety, or wellbeing to the Program Director.
  • Follow and uphold all Royal View Church policies and procedures.
  • Participate in required training and staff meetings.

Required Qualifications

Applicants must:
  • Have experience working with children ages 4 and up.
  • Be comfortable leading and participating in sports, recreation, and active play.
  • Be dependable and able to commit to a fixed schedule.
  • Have reliable transportation.
  • Have a Vulnerable Sector Check completed within the past 12 months, or be willing to obtain one prior to employment.
  • Have or be willing to obtain First Aid & CPR certification.
  • Be willing to follow and align with Royal View Church's policies and procedures.

Education & Professional Background

We are particularly interested in candidates who are:
  • In good standing with the College of Early Childhood Educators (CECE).
  • In good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT).
  • Pursuing or holding a degree or diploma in:
    • Child and Youth Care
    • Recreation and Leisure Services
    • Psychology
    • Social Work
    • Sociology
    • Kinesiology, particularly with a focus on working with children ages 4 and up

Assets

  • Background in sports and recreation.
  • Experience leading children's sports or recreational programs.
  • Experience working in an after-school program, school, camp, childcare, or community recreation setting.
  • WHMIS training.
  • Safe Food Handling training.
  • Experience working with children with diverse needs and abilities.
  • Experience planning and leading children's activities.

Schedule

This is a part-time position working 4 days per week, with shifts scheduled between:
2:30 PM–5:30 PM, Monday–Friday
Applicants must be able to commit to a consistent, fixed schedule of four days each week.
